Modern farming with Traditional Values is the best way to describe how we run our farm. We feel it's important to strike a balance between the additional of new farming practices and technologies and the hard work and dedication that is historically the backbone of farming.
New technology has allowed us to reach yields that far exceed those once possible. New seed hybrids, herbicides, variable rate fertilizer application, and guidance systems are just a few of the things we use to increase yield and profitability.
We use a variety of tillage practices on our farm. Largely we use more traditional tillage practices and a corn/soybean rotation. On some of our more erodible ground we no-till soybeans and avoid fall tillage when going to corn. We also raise winter wheat and plant double crop soybeans after wheat harvest.
We actively scout our acres all growing season to be able to quickly respond to any problems that could occur throughout the year. This allows us to deal with any insects, weeds, or disease that may require some attention. We also have regular soil samples done to allow us to place lime and fertilizer where they are needed most and in some instances to use variable rate application in fields with varying needs.
We treat all of our acres, rented or owned, the same. We regularly fix tile, maintain waterways and terraces, and keep roadsides mowed.
